Mrs. deAngeli based Copper-Toed Boots on stories she knew about her father's childhood growing up in Lapeer. Michigan. This style of writing is called historical fiction. She created situations for the story using actual events from the history of the area and from actual things that happened to her fathe, his family and friendsr. Weaving these factual events together with things taken from her imagination make us feel that we are there with Shad as he works to earn those Copper-Toed Boots.
